Oakland County Sheriff Deputy killed in chase crash identified as 22-year veteran with the office

- The office of the Oakland County Sheriff reports a Deputy was killed Thursday morning during a police pursuit.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office identified the Deputy as Eric Overall, 50, of Genesee County. Overall was a 22-year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

According to the OCSO, Overall had just finished deploying "Stop Sticks" at approximately 12:30 a.m. on M-15 near the intersection of Seymour Lake Rd in Brandon Township when he was hit by the chase suspect he was attempting to stop.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Overall was not in the street at the time of the crash and was well off of the roadway. 

"It is our belief that from all evidence collected that the suspect deliberately ran down Deputy Overall swerving to hit him," Undersheriff Michael McMabe wrote in an email to the media Thursday.

The pursuit that began in Lapeer County, went westbound on I-69 to southbound M-15, and entered Oakland County in Brandon Township where he hit the Deputy. Deputy Overall was assisting the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office at the time of the crash.

When the suspect hit the deputy, his vehicle rolled over and the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office, the chase started in the parking lot of the Lapeer County Jail after the suspect made threats that there an imminent threat to the public.

The Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy on Deputy Overall, whose death has been ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma.

The suspect, a 22-year-old man from Macomb Township, is currently being held in the Macomb County Jail. 

According to the OCSO, the suspect has four prior convictions for Possession of Marijuana and a prior conviction for Resisting and Obstructing Police.

The Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit will be presenting a warrant request to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office on Saturday.

Deputy Overall had been recently married and leave behind one adult son. A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist the family.
